The electrical equipment industry shows strong revenue growth from about 45,000 to over 120,000 million USD between 2016 and 2024. 
However, profitability has been more volatile, with net income declining after 2022 and the share of profitable firms trending down.

Revenue has grown significantly, but profitability has weakened. 
Rising scale is matched by increasing cost pressure and competition. 
This makes supplier selection and sourcing strategy critical to sustaining performance.

Key Insight

The market is highly concentrated. The leading suppliers combine scale, technology, and regional manufacturing reach. China based firms lead on cost and capacity, while US linked production improves supply security. Therefore, Tesla must balance cost leadership from CATL and BYD with supply security from LG Energy Solution and Panasonic.

Hence, LG Energy Solution and Panasonic offer the best balance of supply security and reliability. CATL leads in cost and scale but carries geopolitical risk. A mixed sourcing strategy is likely the best fit.

Market structure: The battery market is highly concentrated. The top suppliers account for about 82 percent of global supply in 2025. This gives suppliers stronger leverage in pricing and contract terms.

Key insight

This table explains the power balance between Tesla and battery suppliers. Supplier power is structurally strong. Tesla offsets this through scale, diversification, and vertical integration. Overall bargaining power is balanced. Tesla can negotiate pricing and partnerships, but it still depends on suppliers for capacity.

Key insight

Total score is based on a weighted scoring model. Each supplier is rated from 1 to 10 across the criteria and multiplied by its weight. The final score reflects both performance and importance, not just raw capability. Scores reflect capacity, margins, geographic exposure, and technology maturity.

The revenue distribution is highly skewed. The median firm generates about 46.8M, while top players reach around 4,695M at the 90th percentile. This large gap shows strong market concentration, where only a few suppliers operate at the scale required for Tesla, reinforcing the importance of partnering with large, high-capacity firms.

The best approach is dual or multi sourcing. Tus, tesla should use CATL for cost and scale, while relying on LG Energy Solution and Panasonic to strengthen supply security and long term resilience.
